This year Building Connections 2021 will be held -over zoom – offering 3 workshops.

November 25 – HIV Pathways – Prevention | Testing | Treatment

December 3 – PrEP

December 9 – Representation in HIV/HCV Care

The conference will invite Service Providers, and People Affected by HIV/AIDS and People at Risk from Northeastern Ontario to attend. This mini-conference is designed to enhance the quality of counseling, education and meet the needs of the community in Northeastern Ontario.

The team organized for there to be a name pulled from participants during each session for prizes!

Thursday, November 25th HIV Pathways Prevention-Testing-Treatment

* Lisa Toner, WHAI Community Development Coordinator (Women in HIV/AIDS Initiative) Presenting: Harm Reduction and Prevention in 2021Lisa Toner has spent the last 15 years of her career on the frontline of harm reduction in North East, supporting community and connecting those at risk, living with and affected by HIV and Hepatitis C into care. She was involved in bringing access to naloxone to the Sudbury/Manitoulin region and providing overdose recognition and response to community members experiencing drug poisoning and training people who use drugs, their supports and partnering organizations across the region to respond effectively to opioid poisoning overdoses and has tirelessly advocated for the now approved Consumption and Treatment Service. Lisa has recently transitioned into the Women’s Community Development Coordinator, a member of the Women and HIV/AIDS Initiative provincially, while continuing as a harm reduction activist. She has a fondness for the outdoors, hiking and kayaking the hidden beauty of our region and is a strong advocate for the specific needs of Women in the North.

* Keenan Boily, HCV Treatment Nurse, Réseau ACCESS Network

Presenting: Pathways to Testing – HIV/Hepatitis C Keenan is originally from Timmins, Ontario. She began her post-secondary studies at Northern College and graduated from the Personal support worker program. She worked as a PSW for 2 years, when she decided to change her career path, and began her nursing studies. She graduated in 2018 from the Bachelor of Sciences in Nursing program at Cambrian College. She is now a Registered Nurse working at Réseau ACCESS Network as the HCV Treatment Nurse.

* Brenda Kirkbride, Registered Nurse, HAVEN (HIV AIDS Extended Network)

Presenting: Changes to HIV Treatment

Brenda has been a nurse for 30+ years. For the past 20 years, she has worked in the HAVEN Program located at Health Sciences North (Sudbury). The HAVEN Program is the only outpatient HIV clinic in Northeastern Ontario, serving a large geographical area. Brenda is an AIDS Certified Registered Nurse (ACRN). She is fluently bilingual and has done many presentations in French and English. A strong advocate for her patients, Brenda is committed to dispelling myths surrounding HIV and addressing the stigma and discrimination it brings.
